| Zeit kommt, ist da, ist vorüber, war einmal. Unser Leben ist ausgerichtet nach einem unfassbaren Phänomen, das wir akzeptiert haben, an das wir glauben. Alle. Manche mehr, andere weniger - darum funktioniert Zeit. Vor Tausenden von Jahren haben wir Kalender und Uhr dem Lauf der Gestirne nachempfunden und geglaubt, die Zeit damit in den Griff zu bekommen. Aber, auch wenn wir sie messen, begreifen wir sie deshalb doch nicht. |
Time will be. Time is. Time was. - Once upon a time. Our lives are ruled by an insubstantial phenomenon that we all accept, we all believe in. - All of us. Some of us more than others – that’s how TIME works. Thousands of years ago we invented calendars and clocks that followed the movements of the stars. And we believed that we understood TIME. But just because we can measure TIME, it doesn’t mean we understand it. |

| Bis vor vier Jahren war er der Uhrmacher von San Marco, Hüter der Zeit. Seine Wohnung war der Torre dell’Orologio, der Uhrturm am Markusplatz. Er war der letzte, der in einer Uhr aufwuchs, wohnte und arbeitete. Der heute 42jährige erlernte das Uhrmacherhandwerk von seinem Vater, wie andere Kinder das Reifenflicken. Familienleben in der Uhr. Das Kind Alberto als Unruhe, damals… Doch der Uhrturm von San Marco wurde restauriert, die Uhr modernisiert, der Zeit angepasst. Alberto musste ausziehen. Statt ihm zieht nun ein präzise gesteuerter Elektromotor die Gewichte der jahrhundertealten Pendeluhr hoch. |
Until four years ago he was the Clockmaker of San Marco, Guardian of TIME. He lived in the Torre dell’Orologio, the clocktower in St Mark’s Square. He was the last person to have grown up, lived and worked in a clock. Now forty-two years old, he learnt clockmaking from his father, as other children learn to mend tyres. We’ll see family life in the clock - and the child Alberto as a balance wheel, but then... …the clocktower of San Marco was restored, and the clock modernised and suited to the times. Alberto had to move out. In Alberto’s place, a precisely controlled electric motor now draws up the weights of the centuries-old pendulum clock. |

Und im kreativen Chaos: Regale voller Enzyklopädien und Wörterbücher der Theologie neben einem Uhrmacherdrehstuhl. Pascals ‚Penses’ neben Lupen und Schraubenziehern, Kunstbände neben Philosophie-Anthologien und Händel-Schallplatten. | Today, after his life in the clocktower, Alberto still lives in Venice with his wife and children. And he lives in a state of creative chaos: shelves loaded with encyclopaedias and dictionaries of theology, tower next to a watchmaker’s swivel chair. Pascal’s Penses next to magnifying glasses and screwdrivers, art books next to anthologies of philosophy and recordings of Haendel. | ||||
| Alberto kann nicht schlafen. Das Ticken der alten Turmuhr fehlt ihm wie einem Kind der Herzschlag der Mutter. Seine Schlaflosigkeit ist ausgefüllt mit seinen Gedanken zum Thema Zeit und mit der Sorge, wie es seinem seit Jahrhunderten tickenden Gefährten nun gehen mag. | Alberto can’t sleep. He misses the ticking of the clock in the old tower as a child misses its mother’s heartbeat. His sleepless nights are filled with thoughts on the nature of TIME, and with worries about the health of his old companion – ticking away in the tower, as she has been for centuries. | ||||
| Der Zuschauer erlebt einen Tag in Albertos Reise durch die Zeit, den Ostersonntag – ein besonderer Tag im Kalenderjahr: ein filmisches Tagebuch und persönliche Chronik, essayistisch, voll von Reflexionen, Anmerkungen. Seine Gedanken graben sich tief in die Ereignisse der Geschichte hinein, führen zu anderen, längst erloschenen Kulturen. Und kreisen um die ewigen Fragen nach dem Erfassen von Zeit: Was ist der Kern dessen, das die ZEIT für uns Menschen ausmacht? | Our audience lives through a day in Alberto’s journey through TIME – Easter Sunday, a special day in the Calendar. They’ll see a filmic diary and a personal chronology; an essay, filled with reflection and comment. His thoughts journey deeps into the events of history, leading to other long-forgotten cultures. And always they circle around the eternal questions of the nature of TIME. What lies at the centre of that which we humans experience as TIME? | ||||
